Berlin Marathon 2026 course: route, pacing and aid stations

Berlin's broad, low-relief course rewards controlled pacing, but “flat” does not remove congestion, corners, aid-station movement or GPS error. Use the official kilometre points and your elapsed-time plan.

The route in one answer

The 2026 start is on Straße des 17. Juni between Brandenburg Gate and Kleiner Stern. The city loop returns through Brandenburg Gate near the end, then continues west to the actual finish on Straße des 17. Juni. The Gate is the final landmark; it is not the finish line.

Set even checkpoint targets, let the first crowded kilometres settle, and compare your watch with course markers. A flat profile can support steady pacing, but it does not guarantee a personal best or remove the need to prepare for 42.195 km.

Read the course in five broad phases

The landmark sequence below is an orientation aid from the organiser's current interactive map. It is deliberately broad: landmarks sit on or near the route and are not timing mats. Follow the measured course and 2026 signs on race day.

Broad route phases; kilometre ranges are planning bands, not landmark measurements.

Start to 10 kmStraße des 17. Juni, Victory Column, then the government district.Expect the field to take time to spread. Hold the effort and use early markers before judging watch pace.
10 to 20 kmThe route turns through central and eastern Berlin before running south towards Südstern.Settle into the planned average. Treat turns and aid movement as part of the course rather than trying to recover seconds immediately.
20 to 30 kmSouthern and western neighbourhoods, with Schöneberg Town Hall and Platz am Wilden Eber as map landmarks.Use elapsed time at official markers to review the whole plan, not one noisy GPS split.
30 to 40 kmBack towards the centre via the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church area, Philharmonie and Potsdamer Platz.Keep navigation simple and know where supporters will stand; several central streets can look similar late in the race.

Map and elevation: what is actually verified

The organiser's start and finish area PDF is explicitly marked July 2026 and subject to change. It controls the final approach distinction: the route passes through Brandenburg Gate and finishes farther west. The interactive map is linked from the current organiser course page, but the map itself does not display an edition year.

The course page also links a marathon GPX whose filename is BM25_Marathon-Strecke.gpx. RaceIndex does not treat that 2025-labelled file as a 2026 elevation source. The parent race page currently shows mapped geometry fetched on 25 June 2026, but no usable elevation-profile metrics and no claim that its trace is the official 2026 route.

“Flat” describes the course's general character. Without a verified 2026 elevation trace, this guide gives no ascent figure, fastest-course guarantee or kilometre-specific elevation adjustment.

Build a pace plan that survives GPS drift

Before the race

Turn the target finish time into kilometre or mile elapsed checkpoints. Memorise a few larger checkpoints so the plan remains useful without constant watch prompts.

On the course

Compare elapsed time with official kilometre boards. GPS distance can diverge through city streets, turns and imperfect racing lines; avoid changing the whole plan because of one split.

The official 2026 page lists pacers by starting block and target time. Your start card controls your block, so confirm that a desired pacer is available where you are assigned. Build your own reference with the marathon pace chart.

Confirmed 2026 aid pattern

The current official course page lists water at 5, 12, 17.5, 22.5, 27.5, 32.5, 34.5, 38 and 40 km. Fuller stations with water, fruit, tea and Maurten Drink Mix 160 are listed at 9, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 36 km; Maurten Gel 100 is listed at 27.5 km. Drinks are served in cups, and refill points for personal hydration systems are at the last water table at each aid station.

Put the stations you intend to use into your plan and practise that routine in training. Recheck the organiser page before race day because the schedule and course remain subject to change.

Connect the course to travel and spectators

The organiser asks runners to use public transport and says the bib includes Berlin ABC travel from 24 to 27 September. The start card supplies further ticket and access information. Choose the correct entrance and time from that card rather than navigating only to Brandenburg Gate.

For supporters, select one or two viewing points with independent public-transport routes, then a meeting point outside the controlled finish area. Avoid a plan that requires crossing the course or moving through road closures. Use the Berlin spectator guide for the handoff.
