5K pace chart

Compare 5K finish times with pace per kilometre, pace per mile and halfway splits. Choose a target from 15 minutes to one hour, or enter your own time for a complete split plan.

A 25:00 5k means an average pace of 5:00 per km or 8:03 per mile, over 5 km.

5K finish times and average pace

Every row assumes even pace. Select a finish time for the full split plan. The table covers 15:00 to 1:00:00; use the custom planner for other targets.

Custom target

Build your 5K split plan

Set a target finish time, then read every kilometre or mile checkpoint through the exact finish.

Target finish25:00

Use total minutes, mm:ss or h:mm:ss — for example 210, 45:00 or 3:30:00.

Enter a target up to 24 hours. Check your event's separate cutoff rules.

Use the kilometre landmarks

For a 25:00 target, divide 1,500 seconds by 5: the baseline is exactly 5:00 per kilometre. Even pacing puts 1K at 5:00, halfway at 12:30 and 4K at 20:00, leaving one final five-minute kilometre. Those cumulative checkpoints are more useful during a race than repeatedly recalculating an instantaneous watch pace.

If your target falls between the static rows, use the custom planner rather than rounding the finish goal to the nearest minute. The chart rows are quick navigation examples. The planner accepts any valid positive time up to 24 hours and applies the same distance-based arithmetic.

Convert miles without changing the race distance

NIST defines one international mile as exactly 1.609344 kilometres, so 5K is about 3.106856 miles. A 25:00 5K therefore averages about 8:02.8 per mile. The displayed pace is rounded for reading; multiplying a rounded 8:03 by 3.106856 can differ slightly from the original 25:00 target.

Mile and kilometre checkpoints do not coincide. Choose the unit used by the course markers when possible, and keep the other column as a conversion rather than switching units mid-race.

Treat the watch as a second measurement

The chart uses the advertised 5,000-metre race distance. A watch estimates the path you recorded, and GPS drift or environmental factors can affect its pace and distance output. It may show slightly more or less than 5K even when the course and official result are correct.

Use the organiser's marked course and official timing as the race record. On the move, compare cumulative elapsed time at reliable course markers; a noisy current-pace number can make a mathematically sound plan feel inconsistent.

Know what even pace leaves out

An even split is a neutral reference, not a claim that constant pace is best for every runner or course. Hills, turns, congestion, surface and conditions can move individual splits while the cumulative target remains useful.

This page does not estimate fitness or convert a result at another distance into a 5K forecast. Use the separate PB predictor for a modelled estimate, then return here only when you have chosen the finish time you want to translate into splits.

How this pace chart is calculated

Average pace is target time divided by distance. For 5 km, pace per kilometre is target seconds ÷ 5. Pace per mile multiplies the seconds-per-metre value by 1609.344 metres. Each elapsed checkpoint is calculated directly from that unrounded value.

The finish row retains the exact distance, including any partial kilometre or mile. Segment time covers the distance since the previous checkpoint. Rounding happens only for display; adding displayed segment times can differ slightly from the displayed finish. CSV includes unrounded seconds as well as readable times.

This is an even-pace calculation. It does not forecast fitness, adjust for hills or weather, or determine whether an event permits walking. Use the PB predictor to explore performance estimates, and the cutoff guide to interpret official checkpoint rules.
