Chicago Marathon 2026

Chicago Marathon 2026 course: route, pacing and aid stations

Chicago's loop joins 29 neighbourhoods to a Grant Park start and finish. Its generally flat character makes even pacing practical, but crowding, downtown GPS drift, aid-station movement and the final Roosevelt Road approach still belong in the plan.

The route in one answer

The marathon starts on Columbus Drive at Monroe Drive and finishes on Columbus Drive south of Balbo Drive, both in Grant Park. The course first works through central Chicago, reaches north-side neighbourhoods, returns through the city centre, then loops west and south before the final run back to Grant Park.

Use the organiser's official mile and kilometre signs to control pace. Expect the closing route to turn from Michigan Avenue onto Roosevelt Road and then onto Columbus Drive; the turn onto Columbus is the approach to the finish, not the finish line itself.

Read the course in six broad phases

These are orientation bands from the official 2026 course map, rather than exact landmark measurements. Follow the measured route and race-day signs if a street or turn changes.

Map and elevation: what is verified for 2026

The organiser's PDF is explicitly labelled for 11 October 2026 and its filename identifies the 2026 course. It shows the neighbourhood loop, mile and 5 km markers, aid stations, Roosevelt Road, Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive. The organiser also says the map is subject to change.

The official map does not publish an elevation profile, total ascent or a grade for Roosevelt Road. The closing street sequence confirms where the familiar late rise occurs, but it does not support a precise climb figure or a fixed time adjustment. “Flat” is useful course character, not a guarantee of a fastest time.

Use the official 2026 PDF for turns and stations. When comparing a recorded elevation profile, check its route year and measurement method before using it to set a pace target.

Build a pace plan that survives downtown GPS drift

Tall buildings, river crossings and repeated turns can make live GPS pace noisy in central Chicago. The organiser explicitly warns that the distance on a watch or phone may differ from the official race distance. Signage marks every mile and kilometre, while timing checkpoints sit at the start, every 5 km, halfway, miles 20 to 25, mile 25.2 and the finish.

Prepare elapsed checkpoints

Convert the target finish into 5 km, halfway and later-mile elapsed times. Keep a few on paper or in memory so one bad GPS split cannot rewrite the race.

Read clocks correctly

Finish-line clocks show elapsed time for each wave. Your individual time begins when you cross the start, so account for that difference before comparing a clock with your plan.

Protect the measured line

Run turns cleanly when space permits, but do not weave through a crowded opening or cut across runners to recover watch distance.

Build printable kilometre or mile targets with the marathon pace chart. Average pace is a reference; course flow and the official markers decide how useful each live split is.

Use the confirmed 2026 aid pattern

The current official course page lists 20 aid stations roughly one to two miles apart. The station order is medical support and runner transport access, toilets, lemon-lime Gatorade Endurance Formula, announcements, then water. Knowing that order helps you choose a side and avoid a late move across other runners.

Maurten Gel 100 depots are listed at mile 12.4 near Aid Station 9 and mile 18.1 near Aid Station 14. Bananas are listed at Aid Stations 16 to 18, covering miles 20.2 to 23. Water refill points are immediately before Aid Stations 4, 7, 12 and 16, at miles 5.7, 10.1, 15.7 and 20.3. Refill points are for approved self-carried hydration gear.

Choose the stops and products that belong in your own plan, practise that routine in training, and recheck the page before race day. The official station list controls if it changes.

Plan for the course time limit

The organiser publishes a 6-hour-30-minute course limit and says a vehicle following the last starter maintains approximately 15 minutes per mile. Runners falling behind that pace must move to the sidewalk as roads reopen; support and an official recorded finish may no longer be available.

Include stops in your plan and check the official course-limit instructions before choosing a run-walk strategy. The published overall limit and the moving road-reopening schedule both matter.

Connect the final miles to the rest of the weekend

The Roosevelt-to-Columbus turn comes very late, but the finish remains farther along Columbus Drive south of Balbo. Keep moving through the signed finish flow and arrange a meeting point outside the immediate finish area. Grant Park access and street closures make the line itself a poor reunion or vehicle-pickup plan.

Use the Chicago travel guide to connect the route with accommodation, the McCormick Place expo and airport journeys. Save the exact 2026 edition in My Season and add the final map check, aid choices and meeting point as personal actions.
