Chicago Marathon 2026

Chicago Marathon: where to stay and plan your weekend

Choose your area around the journey you most want to simplify: Thursday, Friday or Saturday packet pickup at McCormick Place, or Sunday's start and finish at Grant Park.

The practical answer

Prioritise Grant Park if race morning is your hardest journey

For most runners, the strongest first search area is the Loop or South Loop within a route they have checked to Grant Park. Both the 2026 start and finish are in the park, while packet pickup is a separate trip to McCormick Place. Staying beside McCormick Place reverses that tradeoff: expo access becomes easier, but Sunday still requires a journey north to Grant Park.

Compare exact properties by door-to-door routes, cancellation terms, taxes and fees. A hotel name or neighbourhood label does not prove that its entrance remains convenient when race closures and secured park access are in place.

Choose an area by the journey it simplifies

01

Grant Park edge, Loop or South Loop

Best fit: runners who want to reduce race-morning and post-finish travel.

The start and finish are both on Columbus Drive in Grant Park. Search from the park outward, then map the property's actual door to the runner entrance once the current access map is available.

Tradeoff: packet pickup still requires a separate journey south to McCormick Place.

02

McCormick Place corridor

Best fit: runners whose arrival time makes expo access the main constraint.

The Abbott Health & Fitness Expo is in the North Building, Level 3, Hall B1. The organiser's transit directions use the Green Line to Cermak-McCormick Place followed by a three-block walk east.

Tradeoff: Grant Park is a different destination. Test the Sunday journey and a finish-to-lodging route before booking.

03

A simple CTA route farther out

Best fit: runners widening the accommodation search while keeping predictable connections.

Only shortlist a property after checking both journeys: accommodation to McCormick Place and accommodation to the correct Grant Park access point. Count transfers, station-to-door walking and the service available at the time you need it.

Tradeoff: a lower room quote can be offset by more transfers, paid rides or a fragile early-morning route.

O'Hare or Midway: compare the complete trip

Flight timing and price may decide the airport. If the options are close, compare the airport-to-accommodation route and the operating hours you actually need.

Build the weekend around four journeys

  1. 1

    Airport or station to accommodation

Save a primary route and a late-arrival alternative. Include the final station exit or pickup location, not just the line name.

  2. 2

    Accommodation to packet pickup

The 2026 expo runs at McCormick Place on Thursday 8 October, 10am-6pm; Friday 9 October, 9am-6pm; and Saturday 10 October, 9am-6pm. The organiser says times are subject to change. Packet pickup is in person, so place it in the itinerary before optional plans.

  3. 3

Accommodation to your Grant Park entrance

CTA is the organiser's recommended race-weekend mode. Work backwards from your own corral closure: 7:20am for Wave 1, 7:45am for Wave 2 or 8:10am for Wave 3 in the published 2026 schedule. Add walking, security, baggage and disruption time.

  4. 4

Finish to meeting point, accommodation and onward travel

The finish is on Columbus Drive south of Balbo Drive. Do not use the finish line itself as a vehicle pickup point. Choose a meeting place and route outside the controlled area after the organiser publishes the current access map, then allow for slow walking and street closures before any same-day departure.

Price the whole weekend, line by line

Hotel rates and availability move too quickly for a fixed guide price. Use the quote you can actually book and record every mandatory fee.

Booked costs

  • Race entry already paid, including processing fees
  • Flights or intercity rail
  • Room rate x nights
  • Accommodation taxes and mandatory property fees

Weekend movement

  • Airport transfers in both directions
  • Expo journey and any baggage storage
  • Race-day transport for runner and supporters
  • Parking and tolls if driving

Daily and contingency

  • Meals and items you already plan to use
  • Phone data or roaming
  • Late checkout or an extra night if chosen
  • A separate contingency amount

Total weekend cost = race entry + booked travel + accommodation total + local transport + planned daily costs + contingency.
